In The Beginning...

Dr. Henry Morris has died. He was 87 years old. Who? you say?

Dr. Morris was the founder of modern creation science, the first to harmonize the Bible and science, and was, in a very real sense, responsible for intelligent design thought that sprang out of that. Because of him, science is recognizing that the evidence on origins fits the design model better than the evolution model.

The origins of creation science can be traced to the publication of his first major work, "The Genesis Flood", which he co-authored with Dr. John Whitcomb in 1961.

The impact of "The Genesis Flood" has been far-reaching. The book accomplished two important goals: First, it demonstrated that any attempt to diminish the biblical account of a global flood does so at the expense of sound hermeneutics and biblical orthodoxy. In so doing, it refuted various evolutionary compromise theories like the local flood model, the tranquil flood model, and the Gap theory, all of which incorporated uniformitarian, evolutionary assumptions.

Second, the book presented a working and intelligent model of biblical catastrophism that demonstrates how flood model geology provides biblically sound answers regarding the age of the earth. He also demonstrated how all geologic data can not only be reconciled with the Biblical account, but that it actually fits better than evolotion theory.

See, Dr. Morris was not a doctor of theology or philosophy... he was a Dr. of Hydrology. He studied water and the way it works and the physics of what happens...a truly comprehensive look at the data, and then applied the things he learned to the flood model.

He challenged the basic presuppositions of modern evolutionary theory. He was convinced that if one looked at the facts, evolution would crumble. He and Dr. Duane Gish went and debated high level professors and scientists on secular college campuses, and won every single one. They were able to demonstrate that the facts fit together to form a whole, and that their model was at the service of the facts. All of the evolution scientists who they debated could not fit the facts to the evolution model, and it was seen that the facts were at the service of the model, and those that didn't fit were thrown out.

Dr. Morris was also the founder of the Institute for Creation Research. All creation scientists will tell you that his work has influenced them immensly.

Hey! I knew who he was! My mom was big into creation science during my high school days and I watched eeeeevery single video. Can't say Morris' was particularly enthralling ;) but obviously a very brilliant man. God blessed us with his presence for awhile for which Christians ought to be very thankful!

(Now Ken Ham....THERE'S a speaker!)

I'm right there with Carrie (although I'm not sure who she is..). My mom made us watch all the videos and read some of the books-- must be a homeschool thing. I did get the chance to meet Henry Morris (and his son John, plus a few extras) at a three day seminar that my mom and us kids volunteered at several years ago. He was an awe-inspiring (maybe because he was the first celebrity I ever met), yet humble man to meet. Even though he was completely brilliant, I'll remember his sense of being just another guy, and how nice he was to the little twelve ear old girl who recognized him from the book jackets and VHS tapes.
