Roman Polanski's Oliver Twist

This trailer has me wanting more. I like the 1960-whatever version (Oliver!), but it was a musical, and as such wasn't quite everything the original story had (though very dark for a musical, well directed by Carol Reed and exremely well acted).

It looks like Polanski is creating another masterpeice. I don't care what his personal life is like, he makes great films. This seems to have great production design, the actors in the film, specifically Kingsley, have great resumes, and overall I look forward to it!

I'm not in the film community. I do care what his personal life is like.

Me too I don't really think that we can not go to see a film just because their ideas aree different than ours. I can not wait till the movie comes out. He does always do good things.

I don't care about his Roman's personal life (plenty of directors have as much dirt, if not more, in their cemeteries).

I care about the artist and I'm very anxious to see what he did with Dickens's tale (especially seeing how he will portray Mr. Brownlow).

Perhaps you should care, Will. He gave drugs to a 13 year old before raping and sodomizing her; then skipped the country. He was 43 years old.

First off, I have anonymous posting so that people who don't belong to Blogger can post comments (several friends are Xanga people). Please, don't leave a post and not sign it. Or are you afraid that I will know who you are?

Secondly, he makes great films. That doesn't mean I think he shouldn't be punished for what he did. But I am not going to deprive myself of seeing a great film like The Pianist, or this film because his personal life is messed up. MOST film directors have some sort of personal problem in their life (heck, most artists in general). I either have to start making some kind of gradation of how bad the behavior has to be before I won't support them, or I can evaluate the product, and decide if I think that it is morally reprehensible or not, and not take into account the creators background.

Oliver Twist is a great story, and one that more people should read and take to heart (especially conservatives in this country). By all accounts, the film is wonderful. Therefore, I will ignore the fact that Polanski is not a person I would want to let my 15 year old sister alone with, and I will enjoy the film he helped create.

My original post was geared towards your comment that you did not care about his "personal life", which is an exculpatory cliche usually reserved for those who have shortcomings such as drunkeness, compulsive gambling, or excessive flatulence. I assumed you were uninformed, and I was mistaken; you simply have poor judgment.

Your comments as to gradation are well-taken, but I would suggest that at best this amounts to a sippery slope argument. Consistency is not the highest value in life, and the ostracism of child rapists is an unwritten law that even prison lifers respect. But by all means, don't deprive yourself...

You insult my intelligence, but don't have the courage to put your name on something you write. Please, don't comment again unless you are willing to attach your name to your post. Or are you afraid of something?

I think you are wrong, you think I am wrong. We have a fundamental difference in opinion. I evaluate the morality of the product, you evaluate the morality of the creator of the product. You think I have poor judgement, I think you are inconsistent and small minded and need to experience more of real life.

This is the end of the discussion.
