I think this article is very interesting. I find the Iraq Study Group report to be really dangrous. This is the sort of thing that leads to World War III.
They don't seem to want to win, and even more, there is an undercurrent of anti-Semitism through the thing. One of the recommendations is that we make Isreal give up the Golan Heights in order to get Syria to work with us. It talks about "right of return". The whole report basically says that to win in Iraq, we need to get a peace between the Isrealis and the Arabs (which means that Isreal will have to give up almost everything).
I hadn't done much thinking on Isreal until recently. I don't factor Isreal and the Jews in as a special group in my end times theology, which is a whole other debate.
HOWEVER, I do want Isreal to be a country in Palestine for political reasons. I abhor the way the Arabs and Palestinians have treated the Isrealis, and I think they are really our only certain ally in the region. I am very pro-Isreal, and I am very pro-Jewish. I do think that Paletinian Christians are given the shaft over there, but that isn't only the Isrealis fault, largly that is our fault as Christians.
So why should we sell Isreal out?
This article, by Rabbi Yitzchok Alderstein is very interesting, and I think should be read by all Christians and Jews, so that we can start to work together. The Rabbi is an Orthodox Jew.
But what I think surprised me was his comments about how anti-Semitism really is all through the liberal (or mainline) Protestant denominations, and therefore through alot of liberal politics etc.
By the way, I am a Presbyterian, but not PCUSA. Our church is a conservative evangelical PCA church, which does support Isreal, though, as I said, not for theological end times reasons.
So this report is actually very... scary. I heard someone say today that we are living in 1938, figuratively speaking. I think he might be right.
