Fever Pitch

Fever Pitch This is a fun movie, and something of an oddity. It is a sports movie that women will love, and it is a romantic comedy that sports lovers will like.

Yes, this movie is partially about the Red Sox, Red Sox lore and the last season, which was GREAT in the history of baseball, but it really is a delightful human comedy, about the differences and problems between men and women, and between those who love to work, and those who are nuts about baseball.

The plot is simple, as most good plots are. A woman with a high powered job falls in love with a teacher. Things are going great, they get along well, he makes her laugh, she loves him. Then spring comes along, and it is reavealed that he is a member of the famed Red Sox Nation, and is... fanatical about the Sox. Everything in his apartment is Sox memorabilia. He has been to almost every game, certainly every important game. And now it is spring, and he starts to go to the games non stop.

She wants to get a promotion, and their two lives are at odds. They are in love, make mistakes and you can probably guess the finish (which, on the sports side, sounds like a bad TV cliche, but IT ACTUALLY HAPPENED!!!)

The characters are well realized. Jimmy Fallon does an excellent job as the obviously smart, but goofy teacher/Red Sox fan. Drew Barrymore basically plays... Drew Barrymore, but she does it well!

The script is funny. The Farrelly brothers, who are normally into the gross out humor, are restrained, and kept the story moving, taking the time it needs, but keeping it streamlined.

And then there is the whole Red Sox angle. Now, make no mistake, this is NOT about the Sox or baseball particularly. It is a human comedy using the framework of the Sox and baseball to carry it's commentary on relationships and people. You will gain an appreciation for the Red Sox Nation, but you will also see how hopelessly stupid they can be:) In a lovable sort of way of course.

Anyway, I liked this one:) Guys, take your girlfriend (especially if you are a Boston fan) and don't worry, like Hitch, this isn't a romantic comedy, but a human comedy that is romantic!

By the by, I liked Hitch quite a bit, funny, acting was believable and downright funny at times (Kevin James especially), not to romantic or sappy. I would write a full review, but... well it has been over a month since it came out!
