So, I went to see The Phantom of the Opera the other day with my family. I am a big fan of the book, and I have seen the musical a couple times (once in London, twice on Broadway).
Basically, the movie is the play on film. It is alittle fleshed out with some flashbacks and closeups of things you can't see on stage, but pretty much the same. I enjoyed it.
I did have a few problems though. Mostly because I like the book I think.
1. The Phantom is to young and pretty. He is supposed to be in his 60's and he is pretty ugly apparently. He can go out in public in the book, but he has a mask on, not like the musical, more like a fake nose and stuff that looks relatively real. I know why they had a young sexy phantom, but I thought he should have been older and uglier.
2. The movie looks GREAT, but... I would have liked a more scary gothic look. Just me:)
3. They kind of gutted the story when they made the musical. The book is about this malevolent deformed guy who wants to be loved. The musical is about this slightly deformed, mostly good person who does a few bad things who wants to be loved. It just doesn't have the same resonance. Read the book and you'll see what I mean. He is ALOT more malevolent.
So, those are minor. The movie worked for me, the singing was good (by the actual actors!) and the film looked great.
So, if you liked the play, go see it. If you didn't, stay away:)

Is it just me, or did Will just admit he has a "dark gothic look"? ;)
Talk, Dark, Gothic and Handsome:)
I haven't seen the movie yet but loved the play and also really loved the book. I'm looking forward to seeing the movie. I was wondering if it was more like the play or the book because they both have very different endings. -Amy
