The Pro-Life Argument

There is a new book out by Francis Beckwith that lays out the pro-life argument.

It is called Defending Life: A Moral and Legal Case Against Abortion Choice. National Review published a review of the book here.

The review in itself gives quite a bit of information on the arguments used. I had a conversation with a friend who asked if you can argue a pro-life stance without arguing a Christian based world view.

I think this book, at least the information contained the review, does that pretty well. Frankly a lot of the information and argument contained in the book was new to me, and I have studied the pro-life position quite a bit.

After starting with some of the legal background, it goes into three questions, which I thought were very good. Is the fetus a human being? Is it a person — a moral agent? And does it have any claim to inhabit a woman’s womb?

So, I would encourage you to read the review, and maybe get the book!

Interesting Judgment...

This is very interesting. Basically, a former youth pastor in Texas has been convicted of 2 counts of murder. One of a young girl he had gotten pregnant, the other for the fetus he also killed. This is the first time someone has gotten the death penalty for killing a fetus.

There are alot of things to comment on, and frankly I would agree with the decision.

But one thing I find very interesting, is the line at the end of the article.

According to the Web site of the National Conference of State Legislatures, at least 36 states have homicide laws defining a fetus as a person.

So... In 36 states a fetus is a human. What is different about a fetus who is killed by someone who kills the mother, and a person who gives a woman an abortion? Why is abortion not murder?
