Because It Is GOOD!

This article is interesting. Coldplay's new album has sold very well, and may be the second album in 3 years to sell 1 million in a week. The article is musing on why this is.

The article (or those in it) are urging caution, but are encouraged that the industry is getting back on it's feet, and say the reason it sold is because of "non-traditional" marketing, and because the band is a "superstar band".

Most of the marketing was getting the song "Viva La Vida" and others on iTunes and the radio in advance of the release of the album. They also offered "Violet Hill" for free on iTunes, and played a couple of free concerts.

What did that do? It allowed people to HEAR the songs, hopefully a good representation of the album.

Why did it work? Because people HEARD the song and LIKED it... i.e. it was GOOD MUSIC! I don't understand why the recording industry can't get it through their heads that, just like with anything, if people like it, they spend money on it! The problem isn't marketing, it's that their product of late is CRAP!

They need to stop prosecuting people and complaining and spending more money on marketing, and spend the money on developing genuinely good talent. People will buy something that is good.

If the music is good, it's just a matter of getting it out there for people to hear, which is what they did. If it isn't good, even if you get it saturated in the market people won't buy it.
