Yet Another Exhibit In The Case AGAINST Man Made Global Warming...

File this as another exhibit against man made global warming...

"Stock up on fur coats and felt boots!" advises Oleg Sorokhtin, a fellow of the Russian Academy of Natural Sciences and senior scientist at Moscow's Shirshov Institute of Oceanography. "The latest data . . . say that earth has passed the peak of its warmer period, and a fairly cold spell will set in quite soon, by 2012."

Sorokhtin dismisses the conventional global warming theory that greenhouse gases, especially human-emitted carbon dioxide, is causing the earth to grow hotter. Like a number of other scientists, he points to solar activity - sunspots and solar flares, which wax and wane over time - as having the greatest effect on climate.

"Carbon dioxide is not to blame for global climate change," Sorokhtin writes in an essay for Novosti. "Solar activity is many times more powerful than the energy produced by the whole of humankind." In a recent paper for the Danish National Space Center, physicists Henrik Svensmark and Eigil Friis-Christensen concur: "The sun . . . appears to be the main forcing agent in global climate change," they write.

Given the number of worldwide cold events, it is no surprise that 2007 didn't turn out to be the warmest ever. In fact, 2007's global temperature was essentially the same as that in 2006 - and 2005, and 2004, and every year back to 2001. The record set in 1998 has not been surpassed. For nearly a decade now, there has been no global warming. Even though atmospheric carbon dioxide continues to accumulate - it's up about 4 percent since 1998 - the global mean temperature has remained flat. That raises some obvious questions about the theory that CO2 is the cause of climate change.

Global warming reminds all too much of many other supposed "crises" that we have seen even over my short lifetime: overpopulation, global winter, etc. However, I think a better question might be "What other benefits might we gain from reducing CO2 emissions?" There are a number of crises from the 70s and 80s having to do with environmental impact which turned out to be bogus. But the side effects of the laws passed to fight them lead to a generally cleaner country, and healthier lives for many Americans. I think the Global Warming debate can do the same, if we focus our efforts on alternative fuels rather than on cutting down on industrial activities. If the Global Warming craze leads to a car that ends our dependence on foreign oil, that would still be a good thing.

Imagine a world where we learn in 10 years that Global Warming was a myth, but every American is driving a car fueled by solar power. That would change energy politics worldwide!

I totally agree. I like to point out 2 things to people. 1, there are MANY more very real problems out there related to how we treat the environment. Things like overfishing, over irrigation, forest clearing, smog, you name it. These are things we should be working to fix. 2, we should do that through incentives and tax breaks and getting information out, not by outlawing things.

In the recent energy bill passed by congress they outlawed the incandescent lightbulb as of 2012. What good does that do? Don't outlaw things, or make requirements that are artificial, stimulate invention and advancement!

And how much do you want to bet someone invents an incandescent light bulb by 2012 which is MORE efficient than the current alternatives?

And when disposed of, flourescent bulbs also are a hazzard to the environment.

Unfortunately there are power-hungry people throughout the world, and they learned long ago that if you can't conquer a people by force, you seduce them into giving up their freedoms in exchange for "peace" and "safety". And the best way to accomplish said seduction is to convince the people that there is a crisis.

Crises have always been a mainstay of those opposed to a free people. When I was in junior high, it was the hole in the ozone layer. Why do we no longer hear any more about that? - Because it was debunked and the general public ultimately did not swallow the phony "crisis".

With the Kyoto treaty (pact? - I don't recall), and many other initiatives, the sad truth is that very little will be accomplished regarding the environment, and MUCH will be accomplished in terms of inflating capitalism out of existence, giving socialism free reign over the previously unconquerable United States, squashing the voices of reason, and shackling the world's billions with hopelessly restrictive laws. Hopefully Americans wake up to this REAL SOON!
