Too Bad

Peggy Noonan's column sums up my present feelings pretty well.

The White House doesn't need its traditional supporters anymore, because its problems are way beyond being solved by the base. And the people in the administration don't even much like the base. Desperate straits have left them liberated, and they are acting out their disdain. Leading Democrats often think their base is slightly mad but at least their heart is in the right place. This White House thinks its base is stupid and that its heart is in the wrong place.

I voted for the President twice, the first time because I thought he was conservative and was infinitely better than the alternative, and the second time for much the same reasons.

And now I am getting fed up. He is still better than Kerry would have been, but I am not so sure about him being better than Gore. He certainly isn't conservative. There is rampant spending, bigger government and more government programs.

The last straw is when he basically said that people who opposed his immigration reform bill were stupid. Peggy Noonan's thoughts on that bill, again, are right on target.

Who does he think he is? Who put you where you are? We aren't stupid Mr. Bush, we DON'T LIKE THE BILL. And now we are starting to not like you.

[[Who does he think he is?]]

He thinks he is a president desperate for a positive headline, when his major accomplishments are wars in Afghanistan and Iraq, which may well be abandoned by his successor. A frustrating time, especially when with the early primary start for '08, he is getting less and less attention, despite still being the most powerful man in the world. This is the lesson of history: the second term is always the hardest for a president, because the country knows you can't run again and is already looking beyond you.
