Thoughts on the election

Well, the election is almost over. A solid majority for the Democrats in the House. A slight majority in the Senate.

My personal thoughts are somewhat mixed. I dislike the leadership of the Democratic party and the official party line. They stand for everything that I don't, from approval of the gay lifestyle to abortion on the moral side, to higher taxes (at least for the rich, defined as “those who hold a job”, 96% of the taxes paid in this country are paid by the top 50% of tax payers) and welfare on the fiscal side.

However, as a Christian I don't let politics rule my life. Ultimately nothing has changed, God is still the one in control over all of His creation. Who runs the country is ultimately up to Him, and what they do with that control is known by Him, and has been worked into His plan.

I don't agree with what is being spouted by the press at this point, about it being a referendum on Iraq and the economy. I point to Lieberman winning in CT over an anti-war candidate to support the former, and I think everyone can see that the economy is doing well, better than before 9/11 in terms of the stock market, unemployment and other factors.

I do think this was a referendum on the leadership, not of the President, but of the Republican party. They have not followed the principles that got them into office, those of fiscal responsibility, smaller government, lower taxes (that one they sort of followed), personal responsibility, morality and other things. I think it is interesting that many of the Democrats who won ran on conservative positions on many of those issues.

I also would remind everyone that you can't change the culture by just changing government. Government follows the will of the people. We have to engage and change the culture, and then the people will change the government.
