So... a few years ago (actually about 10) they played the World Cup in the US. I remember, because several of the games were in Chicago which was decorated to the hilt when I visited my grandparents who lived there.
Now, I havn't paid much attention to it since then. Soccer (football to the rest of the world) is played world wide by every class of people, and almost every nation. There are 207 national teams that compete for the cup, which is offered every 4 years. Main reason it is every 4 years is that it takes the previous 3 to get all the qualifying rounds taken care of!
So this is truly a world sport. 1.1 Billion people will watch the games in some fashion this year. Forget the World Series, I want THAT market share!
And it isn't like it is a boring sport either. It is a big field (110 to 120 yard long by 70 to 80 yard wide) with 11 men who manuever a ball across that field without using their hands. Basketball players have nothing on the moves these guys use. Wow. There is nothing more impressive and hard to do than a bicycle kick!
So... I got hooked this year. I have been following it pretty religiously (Amy to, by proxy). I havn't been able to see many of the games (no cable) but what I have seen I have eaten up!
So what is the point? ESPN is broadcasting the games. Go watch them. I bet you'll like them!
