Cannes Critics Jeer "DaVinci"!

Well... the first comments by critics are in on "The DaVinci Code" movie.

At Cannes it was jeered, laughed at, and people basically thought it was tedious, melodramatic and long. They did think that Ian McKellan did a great job (big surprise, he is a great actor) and that other performances were good, but they just didn't go for it.

Read the whole article from AP here. Another from Brietbart is here.

My guess is that it will have a big opening, but then be forgotten as the summer season moves along.

So... go see Over The Hedge this weekend... it is probably a much better, funnier film:D

*EDIT*

Okay, here is the Variety review. Variety is usually a pro-Hollywood entity, after all it is the hometown, home-business paper in Hollywood.

The review rips into the film. What keeps coming up in the reviews I have read is that the plot is the thing that kills the film. The actors are fine (most single out McKellen) but the plot is so twisted, and so dialogue heavy, that the dialogue and plot sink the movie.

Anyway, you can find other reviews at RottenTomatoes.com.

I think it is too soon to count out DVC based on critical reaction alone. I wonder how many people who praised the film to high heaven before seeing it, knew anything but that it was ticking off Pat Robertson? We'll see how it really does in the theaters. I doubt we're going to see Matrix or Titanic-level repeat business here. Frankly, I think most folks will have forgotten about it by the time Spider-Man 3 opens. But if you truly believe this film is a major threat to the spiritual life of the USA, don't let your guard down.

Again, I don't. But a lot of people do think this.

Any thoughts now that the film has had a near-record-breaking opening weekend? Do you think X-Men 3 or Superman Returns will beat it?
