Okay, sorry I HAD to post on this. Andy Rooney has come out and said that no one he knows is pleased that Katie Couric is coming to the CBS Evening News.
Personally, knowing the people at CBS (including Rooney) and the attitude towards hard news (as opposed to soft news, which is more entertainment oriented, more about people and inspiring situations than hard news. Soft news is the domain of morning shows.) I think he is probably right. Couric is a soft news person. She is perky, fun, pretty, and very blonde (I am talking about her persona, I don't know what she is like in person).
This is the antithesis of CBS's hard news division. Say what you will about them, they know news, and they always tried to keep the soft stuff out of the Evening News. CBS Evening News was characterized by events and things that were important to life (at least as they saw it), not stories about how someone's dog saved them by dialing 911 or something. That is one reason that CBS went from the top of the heap to the bottom. They didn't do as many stories on softer, entertainment oriented topics, and more people wanted the wiz bang, feel good stuff.
I think she is a bad fit. Ratings will go up for a bit on the curiosity factor, but then they will go down again because she lacks a certain amount of gravitas. And the ratings for the network news shows will continue to go down as well, because the problem isn't the person reading it, it is the bias that comes across.
So... my thoughts.
The rest is silence...

Although I can see the appeal of Katie Couric, I personally don't care for her. We used to watch Dan Rather because my house-mate liked him. Currently I prefer the NBC evening newscast.
I don't get most of my info from the MSM anyway.
Personally, I don't get the Couric-mania going on at present. She'll do fine job, but won't be something especially special, from whgat I can tell. A "workmanlike choice" as some might say. The fact she is the first woman is noteworthy historically, but that is about it.
I was reading a news lite magazine yesterday, and it said that Meredith Viera and Katie Couric can't stand each other, and that Couric is furious that Viera is getting her job. Quote: "Does she get her clothes from Sears or Filene's Basement?" -Viera on Couric
