Okay, so I haven't really paid much attention to the whole bird flu thing. I basically know that it is A.) in birds and B.) can pass to humans somehow and C.) it doesn't affect a lot of people, but could potentially do so because it is D.) and airborne virus.
My thoughts aren't on the disease per se. I think a lot of this is paranoia. I can see it becoming a problem in one sense, but then again, I can also see it as never really being anything major.
But my thought is this... if you have no belief in God, you have got to be scared. Really scared. I mean, how many people do you know that work out, eat healthy and take every drug known to kill everything bad. I know A LOT of those people.
But with this... someone you don't know coughs near you and you could die. Wow. Talk about scary. You have NO control over this.
No wonder people are scared. But if you believe in a loving all powerful God... it isn't as big a deal. Sure, you shouldn't go breathe deeply next to a chicken farm, but you have to have the attitude that God is there, loves you, and will take care of you no matter what. If He wants you to die, you will and there is NOTHING you can do about it. If He wants you to live, you will. Your life isn't your own, so you don't worry the same way others do. You are only responsible to take what God has given you and use it wisely, be that your wealth or your life.
Don't give in to paranoia about this. Be smart, but don't be hysterical. If you are a Christian...

Bird flu at present has ONLY passed to humans by physical contact (i.e. touching an infected chicken and remaining in close contact on a farm, etc.) Currently, there does not appear to be an infection vector to humans by air.
However, a mutated version of the bird flu was the "Spanish Flu" epidemic that killed MILLIONS worldwide less than a century ago. The possibility of a mutation is what everyone is worried about, because (1) it is unpredictable and (2) you can't create a vaccine for a virus that does not yet exist. Really, those at risk are those who are normally at risk - the very young, the very old, and the infirm. Most healthy children and adults should be okay (though possibly miserable for a week or two) especially with medical care.
Your point remains, though. Without faith, disease can strike at any time no matter what you do. An airborne bird fly mutation just makes it more likely.
The funny thing about this post is it made me reflect on thos Y2K days. Do you know how many Christian friends I had in the Los Angeles area who sold their homes and moved to remote locations in Colorado, Idaho, and Missouri? One family even left the country over the New Year (went to NZ) in case something happened and things got chaotic in the states!
I agree with you. We need to be smart but, ultimately, we need to have FAITH that God will take care of us.
