My Thoughts About The New York Transit Strike

Yes, there is a transit strike in New York City (where I work). Basically, the subways are not working. Now, some of you are saying, big deal, just drive in and walk.

Yeah right. Manhattan is to big to just walk, and when you add the other boroughs... and when you have the normal traffic that New York has, trying to add cars? Not going to happen.

Plus they closed down everything from 96th street down unless you had 4 people in the car.

There were 2 reactions people had to the strike that I could see.

Number 1: Adapt. New Yorkers are great at adapting to things. I talked to one guy who walked 8 miles to get to work! Others had similar stories. True, a lot of people couldn't (or didn't) get in, but in general, people just went on with life.

Number 2: Outrage. Also typical of New Yorkers, they were not afraid to speak their minds about what they thought of the transit workers. And in no uncertain terms.

So... interesting day:) The TWU is being fined $1million each day the strike goes on, because technically, well... it is illegal to strike:D

So we'll see how long this keeps up.

In other news, saw a great sign today... a homeless guy had a sign (they don't beg in New York, they would probably be beat up) that said, "Need money so that I can get drunk and get taken home and molested by two women".

At least he was honest!

I caught part of Martha Stewart's show yesterday. She said on the way to work (which took 3 hours) she was stopped in traffic and there were all these people on the sidewalk. She asked them if anyone wanted a ride and they looked at her as though she were crazy.

As for the homeless guy: do you think he was being honest or hopeful :o)

For the record, Nard, you REALLY need to start carrying a digital camera when you go to New York. I want to see that homeless guy. Who knows? You might make him famous, and start him earning money on the talk show circuit!

Phyllis: I think he was both!:) Honest about what he wanted... hopeful that he would get it!

Nomad: See, since I dropped my digital camera I havn't used it much. I can still, technically, take pictures with it. But all the buttons on the back don't work, so no review, settings or anything.

Anyone want to buy me one so I can provide Nomad with interesting pictures?:)

So how did YOU get to work? And how much time did it take? =) I was wondering if the reason we didn't hear from you yesterday was because you were stuck somwhere. ;) Poor Will! ;D

I actually was in NYC to see the Radio City Christmas Spectacular with my family.

And as far as getting to work, it would be just like normal. Train in (they aren't part of the strike). My office is only 15 blocks from Grand Central Terminal, so I walk it most of the time anyway.

Ditch the new picture!

You know a T-Mobile Sidekick II would solve the problem for you. Take pictures and send them to Flickr or your blog right from inside the city! (Free right now from Amazon.Com if you sign up for service.)
