The appointment solidified the identification of Clinton, once considered a champion of the party's left, with the centrist movement that helped propel her husband to the White House in 1992.
Maybe in the minds of liberal Democrats and the media, but no conservative would ever think that she was "centrist". She is trying to sound that way, but everyone knows where she really stands, and it comes out even now in what she says.
The Democratic party is right to try and figure out what is going on and change with the times. I think they saw in the Roberts nomination just how far they have gone out of favor. I mean, they can't win the House, they can't win the Senate, they can't win the Presidency, and now they are beginning to lose their hold on the Judiciary. But they don't seem to understand why. They don't get that they are losing because of the social positions they take, not so much because of the economic positions.
The things that they will try to change at this council are going to be positions on taxes or some government programs... they may even try to create a position that seeks to temper their pro abortion language or something.
But they are not pro life, which is the only thing that pro lifers will accept. They are not going to be against homosexual marriage, which is the only thing pro traditional marriage believers will accept. And I doubt that they will temper much of their hate, fear and anti American rhetoric.
We'll see. I think the Democratic party has a great legacy, especially in the area of civil rights. They also have a great legacy of truly standing up for the little guy. But somewhere along the line they lost it, and they gave over to the liberals. It is time for the conservative Democrats to take back the party. I just don't think there are enough of them left.

You can't remember, but it was the REPUBLICANS who fought for civil rights and DEMOCRATS who blocked the doors of schools.
The problem is - as it was for Conservatives for some time - is that Liberal Democrats believe they ARE the center. They find it unbelieveable that the country has turned increasingly Conservative, and instead chalk up the recent swings of the voters to ignorance or presentation styles or outright vote rigging. What the Dems need is not another leader looking to define who they are, they need is a leader who is an Evangelist for their ideas.
Love 'em or hate 'em, Rush Limbaugh and Newt Gingrich and the like are powerful evangelists for their ideas. They take the time to explain their positions in clear and simple terms, which hold up under logical analysis. Compare that to Howard Dean or Ted Kennedy, who are more likely to try and win an argument by calling the opponent names. It works for the faithful, but it doesn't create any more of the faithful.
